Tuesday, October 13, 2026 — Short Covering All Session: NIFTY Retests the Low in One Bar, Then Closes Near the High
NIFTY futures opened at 22,400.1 on Tuesday, dipped to 22,368.0 inside the first bar, and that was the end of the selling. The session ran to a high of 22,879.0 and closed at 22,834.8, up 448.3 points (+2.00%) — a 511-point range with the close sitting in its top 10%, just 44 points under the high.
The question coming into the day was whether NIFTY would go back and retest the lows. It did, in one bar. The open undercut Monday's low (22,370.7) by under three points, found no sellers, and the market spent the rest of the session in the other direction.
Order Flow Analysis
The retest lasted exactly one bar
The 9:15 bar printed 7.98K volume with 69.95% of it on the buy side and a delta of +3.18K, the single heaviest delta bar of the morning. Price tested Monday's low from the open, got no follow-through, and was above Tuesday's CPR within the first half hour. From there it never got back inside the band.
The OI Sense overlay read Short Covering from the open and held that colour across the whole session — price rising while open interest fell, which is what a squeeze out of Monday's shorts looks like.
Cumulative delta: up fast, flat, then up again
Cumulative delta rose from 3.18K at the open to 5.58K by 10:00, drifted back to 4.57K by 11:15 (the 10:30 bar's -582 was the morning's largest sell bar and it moved nothing), and sat flat near 4.7K through 12:15.
The interesting stretch was what came next. From 12:30 to 13:45, price stayed pinned in the same 22,600 to 22,700 band while cumulative delta climbed from 4.73K to 5.92K. That is buyers absorbing every sell order at the same prices without letting the market move — the footprint's version of a coiled spring.
The breakout bars came with real volume
The 14:15 to 14:45 window delivered the session's volume: 2.51K at 14:15, 4.80K at 14:30 (a Multiple Imbalances box and a delta of +1.56K, the biggest of the afternoon), then 8.19K at 14:45, the heaviest bar of the day bar the open. Cumulative delta stepped from 6.82K to 8.76K across those three bars. Price went through the Camarilla H5 (about 22,740) and kept going, tagging 22,879.0 near the close — through Tuesday's R2 (22,842) intraday and settling just under it at 22,834.8.
Delta confirmed the highs, VWAP stayed far below
The 15:15 bar added another +620 and printed a fresh cumulative delta high of 9.51K; only the final closing bar gave a little back (-372, cumulative 9.13K). VWAP finished at 22,680.9, which means the close was 154 points above it and the market spent the last hour never coming near it.

15-minute footprint. A 70% buy opening bar, a long balance around VWAP and R1 while cumulative delta quietly climbed, then the 14:30 to 14:45 breakout on 4.8K and 8.19K volume. OI Sense reads Short Covering from open to close.
Key Order Flow Takeaway
- The retest happened in the first bar and failed — Monday's low was undercut by under three points on the open, then rejected on 70% buy volume.
- Short Covering from open to close — OI Sense never changed colour, so this was a squeeze of existing shorts, not fresh longs building from nothing.
- Delta climbed while price sat still (12:30 to 13:45) — absorption, then the breakout.
- The breakout had volume behind it — 4.8K and 8.19K across 14:30 and 14:45, against well under 1.5K per bar through the midday balance.
- Cumulative delta closed at 9.13K after a 9.51K high — almost all of the day's buying held into the close.
Market Profile Analysis
Tuesday builds a tall, tidy profile. The A period runs from the low at 22,368.0 up through the 22,500s as a column of single prints — a Buying Tail at the bottom, the structural footprint of that failed retest. The body of the day sits between roughly 22,560 and 22,680, with the value area at 22,493 to 22,758.6 and the POC at 22,617.5, almost on top of Tuesday's R1 and the flat VWAP shelf from the morning.
The J, K, L and M periods then add a thin run of single prints above 22,700 and up to the high, leaving a close above the value area high. It reads as a Normal Variation day: a wide opening range (an Open-Test-Drive at the low), balance through the middle, and a late range extension to the upside. The single prints above the value area are untested; they are initiative buying that the next session either accepts or starts to fill.

30-minute TPO. A Buying Tail from the A period at the low, a balanced body around the 22,617.5 POC, and a late J to M extension above the value area high.
Structural Levels
For Wednesday, from today's H/L/C (22,879.0 / 22,368.0 / 22,834.8): a normal, 141-point CPR (BC 22,623.5 / TC 22,764.4), about 45% wider than Tuesday's roughly 97-point band and with both ends higher — a bullish-leaning posture. The close sits above the whole band.
Resistance
- 22,879 — today's high.
- 22,975 / 23,116 — Wednesday's Camarilla H3/H4.
- 23,020 — Wednesday's R1.
- 23,205 — Wednesday's R2.
Support
- 22,764 / 22,694 — the CPR top and the pivot. Wednesday's Camarilla L3 (22,694) lands almost on the pivot, so this is a stacked level.
- 22,681 — today's VWAP, and 22,617.5, today's POC.
- 22,554 — Wednesday's Camarilla L4.
- 22,509 — Wednesday's S1.
Options and Futures OI
By the 3:15 pm check, the day's positioning had flipped. PCR went from 0.83 at the open to 1.42, max pain walked from 22,400 up to 22,650, and futures OI was down 0.7% on the day — fewer contracts open and a higher price, the textbook Short Covering signature the overlay was showing all session.
Put writers did the heavy lifting underneath: 22,650 PE (+268L) and 22,600 PE (+245L) were the biggest adds in the window around spot, against call OI falling over the same stretch. Futures were trading around 110 points above spot, so those spot-strike floors sit near 22,760 and 22,710 on the futures chart.
Heading into the day, FIIs still held a net short of about 296K index futures contracts, barely moved from Friday's 294K, while DIIs sat net long near 54%. A 2% squeeze against a short position that size is the sort of move the positioning split has been pointing at all week.
Trading Implications
The continuation case. Short Covering open to close, a Buying Tail at the low, delta confirming the high, and a close above the value area all line up behind the move. A bullish-leaning CPR with the close above it is the same message. Holding above 22,764 (CPR top) keeps that case clean.
The fill-the-prints case. The single prints above 22,700 are untested, and a 2% squeeze that closes 154 points above VWAP has a lot of unfinished business sitting under it. A move back into the 22,694 to 22,764 stacked zone would be a normal test, not a failure.
The level that decides it. Holding the 22,694 to 22,764 zone on any dip argues for another leg toward the 22,975 Camarilla H3; losing 22,617.5 (today's POC) would suggest the squeeze was exhausted in one session.

Conclusion
Monday's close was the answer to Friday's rally, and Tuesday was the answer to Monday. The retest everyone was watching for happened in the first fifteen minutes, found no sellers, and turned into a one-way day of Short Covering that ended 44 points from the high. What happens to the single prints above 22,700 tomorrow tells you whether this was a squeeze that is done or the first leg of something bigger.
