Tuesday, October 27, 2026 — Expiry Day Squeezes the Poor High, Then Pins at Max Pain

Monthly expiry has a habit of making Monday's analysis look prophetic. Monday's recap named two cases: fill the Poor High at 22,785.1 and hold — or probe it and fail. Tuesday gave the second one. NIFTY futures opened at 22,777.5, spent the first 30 minutes squeezing to 22,830.0 — 45 points clear of the Poor High — and was promptly rejected. The rest of the session was a slow drift to the day's low at 22,747.1, a close at 22,748.3, and a change of −28.7 points (−0.13%). Max pain at 22,700 pulled the market like a magnet without quite getting there. The range for the entire session: 82.9 points — the tightest print in October.

Order Flow Analysis

The morning squeeze above the Poor High

The session opened at 22,777.5, essentially flat on Monday's close of 22,774.8. Monday's Poor High sat at 22,785.1. The question was whether Tuesday's open would accept that level or test it. The first two 15-minute bars answered it: a push to 22,830.0, printing a new weekly high and clearing the Poor High by 45 points. The delta in those bars was positive, but the volume signature was thin — the kind of move that reads as short-squeeze positioning rather than fresh conviction. OI Sense in the opening bars: Short Covering — the residual shorts from last week's sell-off covering into expiry, not new buyers entering.

The rejection and the grind lower

22,830.0 held for roughly one period. The delta turned. By 10:00–10:30 IST the market was back below the Poor High level, trading inside 22,785–22,800. The session's characteristic then shifted: each 15-minute bar carved a lower high, delta stayed negative-to-flat, and price drifted toward the day session's VWAP and then below it. The descent was not a collapse — there was no bar with the kind of climactic negative delta that Oct 23's 8.88K reversal bar showed. It was expiry-day time decay: sellers not in a hurry, buyers not present. The low of 22,747.1 printed in the afternoon, with the market spending the final hour between 22,747 and 22,760 before settling at 22,748.3.

Short Covering into the close — the expiry signature

The final 45 minutes showed OI Sense flipping back to Short Covering, even as price sat near the session low. This is the expiry-day footprint: intraday shorts initiated from the 22,800 area were profitable by the afternoon and began covering into expiry settlement. Not a reversal signal — an exit signal. The net result is the market closed where most participants agreed it belonged: 48 points above max pain at 22,700, below the wHigh (22,790.0) that Monday tried to confirm, inside the CPR rather than outside it. Expiry did exactly what wide CPR days are supposed to do — compress range, settle near a gravitational level, and close the month's options cycle without drama.

NIFTY order flow, October 27, 2026

15-minute footprint. Flat open at 22,777.5, Poor High probe to 22,830.0 in the first two bars on Short Covering, immediate rejection. Negative-to-flat delta through the afternoon drift to 22,747.1. Short Covering again in the final 45 minutes as intraday shorts from 22,800 cover into expiry. Close at 22,748.3. Range 82.9 points — tightest session of October.

Key Order Flow Takeaway

  • Poor High at 22,785.1 tested and rejected on the first touch — Monday's analysis named this as the session's decision point. It was. A brief push to 22,830.0 in the opening bars looked like acceptance; by 10:30 the market had given it back and was back inside Monday's range.
  • Thin volume on the 22,830 print — the weekly-high tag was driven by Short Covering positioning rather than fresh demand. When the covering was done, there was nothing behind it.
  • Delta stayed flat-to-negative for six consecutive hours after the morning squeeze. This is not a day that reversed at the low — it ground lower across the full session.
  • Expiry-day OI signature confirmed — Short Covering in the open (expiry squeeze), flat delta mid-session (no fresh positioning), Short Covering at the close (exit of intraday shorts). The OI Sense read told the story cleanly.
  • Closed above expiry day TC at 22,721.6 — the lower bound of the October expiry CPR. The close at 22,748.3 stayed above it, which kept the day structurally neutral rather than flipping bearish.

Market Profile Analysis

Tuesday's profile is a Normal Variation day, slight downside — the session stayed within Monday's range (22,440–22,790), added a fractional new high to 22,830 in the opening periods, then settled back. The balance point for the day — the POC at 22,806.7 — sat well above the close at 22,748.3, confirming that while the morning drew buyers to that level, the market ultimately rejected it and closed below value. The value area for the session ran from a VAH near 22,807 down to a VAL at 22,698.2. The close was inside the value area but near its lower bound — a neutral-to-bearish read within an otherwise quiet expiry.

The [25/29] TPO split shows a slight downside skew: 29 time-price opportunities built above the day's midpoint versus 25 below, but the concentration of TPOs in the 22,790–22,810 range (where the session spent the early morning) and the thin distribution toward the close reflects the typical expiry-day shape — morning auction does the heavy lifting, afternoon is administrative.

The wHigh at 22,841.7 was not broken on a closing basis. The session tagged it intraday to 22,830.0 — within 11.7 points of the reference — but did not close above it. This leaves the weekly high un-confirmed and makes the first session of next week a potential breakout attempt, depending on how the November series opens.

NIFTY market profile, October 27, 2026

30-minute TPO. Normal Variation day with slight downside skew. POC at 22,806.7, VAH 22,806.7, VAL 22,698.2, [25/29] TPO split. Open probed the Poor High to 22,830.0, rejected, closed at 22,748.3. Session stayed inside Monday's value area. wHigh (22,841.7) tested intraday, not confirmed on close. Prior sessions visible left; Oct 26 profile remains the month's strongest structural day.

Structural Levels

The October contract has expired. From today's H/L/C (22,830.0 / 22,747.1 / 22,748.3): the November series CPR will be computed from the November futures, which carry a ~370-point premium over October. Trading resumes Wednesday in the November series.

What October's final session left behind:

  • 22,841.7 — weekly high (intraday to 22,830 today; closing breach of this level is Wednesday's first task for bulls)
  • 22,806.7 — today's POC / VAH. The morning gravitational pull; close below it confirms sellers won the afternoon.
  • 22,785.1 — the Poor High from Monday. Tested, rejected. Remains the structural ceiling from last week's context.
  • 22,748.3 — October's final close. This is where the expiry settled, and where the November roll begins.
  • 22,721.6 — October expiry TC. Close above this today kept the day neutral.
  • 22,698.2 — today's VAL / max pain proxy. The market never visited this; the range stopped at 22,747.1.
  • 22,440.0 — wLow / the level that anchored the entire expiry week. Two tests, two holds. This is the bear case's first checkpoint in the November series.

Options and Futures OI

The October series expires today. Futures OI decline during the session reflected rollover — October longs and shorts closing, November positions opening — rather than directional conviction. The Short Covering read in the first bars and again in the close is the expiry settlement pattern: intraday shorts from the 22,800–22,810 area covering as the market drifted to the low, not a fresh squeeze. Max pain at 22,700 pulled the close within 48 points of itself — close enough for the option market's gravitational effect to be visible, far enough that no mechanical expiry pin happened.

The October series final summary: the contract opened on Oct 1 at 22,670 and expired at 22,748. A net gain of 78 points for a buy-and-hold position over the full month — which is not the point. The point is the 2,792+ points of directional edge the four layers produced on a hindsight read across 17 sessions, with not a single loss.

Trading Implications

The November series opens Wednesday. The expiry week established the 22,440–22,830 range as the last set of references in October. Three things matter coming in:

The Poor High at 22,785.1 remains un-filled on a closing basis. Two Monday sessions in a row printed a high near it (22,790 on Oct 26, 22,830 intraday today) without closing above. A Wednesday open above 22,830 and a close above 22,841.7 (the wHigh) would be the structural confirmation that October's correction ended and the breakout is real. Until then, this zone is resistance.

The 22,440 floor held twice in five sessions. Any pullback in the November series that approaches this level without new OI Sense confirmation (Short Buildup) should be treated as a potential long setup — the same framework read that generated the Oct 26 long from 22,465.

The post-expiry roll premium effect: November futures open with ~370 points of premium baked in. The first day's CPR and pivot levels will look very different from October's. Focus on the raw price structure and the order flow reads, not the absolute levels inherited from the October analysis.

Conclusion

Expiry day delivered its standard script: probe the headline level (22,785 Poor High), fake the breakout to 22,830, reject it, and spend the afternoon drifting toward max pain at 22,700 without quite getting there. The October contract expired at 22,748.3 — 28.7 points below Monday's close, 82.9 points of total range, the quietest session of the month. Monday's analysis named the Poor High rejection as one of two scenarios; Tuesday picked that one. The October series is closed. November opens Wednesday.
